- Couldn't be easier!
-
- LOOK ? Will display a Help Screen.
-
- LOOK No parameters will run in the Interactive Mode, prompting you
- for the required information.
-
- LOOK [/w] <Drive> <SearchText> <ListFile> Puts you in Command Line Mode.
- All three parameters =must= be included or you will be beeped
- and a message will display, and also ask if you would like to
- view the Help Screen. The /w is optional, for wildcard
- searches, see below for explanation.
-
- The following list gives the maximum length of the parameters to be
-
- Create Batch Files from LOOK! lists, with MAKEBAT!
-

- LOOK! 1.03 A FAST easy to use File Search Utility Page 3
-
- entered. They are the same in either Interactive or Command Mode.
- /w : Means this will be a "wildcard" search rather
- than a text fragment search.
- Drive : 3 (allows for drive letter+colon+backslash)
- SearchText : 12 (allows for a full filename)
- NO Wildcards currently.
- ListFile : 30 (allows for drive\directory\filename)
-
- SearchText: Not case sensitive. letters can be in upper or lower case.
-
- NOTE: Because LOOK uses's a different method to parse filenames during a
- wildcard search, the /w switch is needed in Command Line mode, in
- Interactive mode you have a menu selection for this. If you search for
- files under a word fragment mode, giving a wildcard such as R*.*, NO files
- will be found.
-
- LOOK now uses a Program Entry Menu, so you can specify if the search will
- be in text mode, as previous versions, or in wildcard mode.
- Other than that, all looks the same. But it is IMPORTANT to tell the
- program how to LOOK for the files. Searching for text fragments is done
- quite differently than for wildcard specs. Because of this, after each
- search has been completed, you will be returned to the Opening Menu, so
- you can select a different search mode, if you wish.
-
- * LOOK - Interactive Mode:
-
- 1.You are first asked for the DRIVE to search, at this point you may enter
- the exclamation point (!) to abort LOOK. Pressing ENTER will use the
- default drive C:
- It is not required that you supply the colon (:) or the backslash (\)
- they will be automagicaly added. But you may include them if you wish to.
-
- Should you specify an invalid drive, LOOK will do all the displays,
- then end normally with the Done! message. It will also tell you that it
- found 0 files. Now I wonder why......<grin>
-
- 2.Next you're asked for the text to search for. This entry can take many
- forms. It can be a filename, such as MYLETTER.DOC, it can be a file
- extension such as .TXT - .BAT - .MSG etc. If you don't include the
- leading period for searching for a file extension, it will be treated as
- a text fragment. A text fragment can be anything such as RAB,too,A3fg,
- 8876e...whatever. If the text you specify exists anywhere in the
- filename that file will be listed. SearchText can be upper or lower case,
- it doesn't matter.
- Should you happen to press ENTER, without specifying the SearchText, the
- program will quietly abort, and return you to the DOS prompt.
-
- 3.Lastly, you need to enter the name of a text file to write the resulting
- list to. If you want the list displayed to the screen only, simply press
- ENTER. For a listing file, you may include a drive, directory and
- filename, up to the length limit for ListFile (30).
- NOTE: If the ListFile name contains the SearchText in it, the ListFile
- will ALSO be included in the listing. Confusing isn't it :-)

-
-
- While you are in the above fields, you have several editing keys at your
- disposal.
-
- Editing keys are -
- DeleteKey - DeleteKeys character at the cursor.
- LeftArrow - Nondestructive move cursor to the left.
- RightArrow - Nondestructive move cursor to the right.
- End - Move cursor to end of input string.
- Home - Move cursor to start of input string.
- Backspace - DeleteKeys character to the left of cursor.
- Return/Enter - Accepts Field as entered.
- ***************************************************************************
-
- You will be asked if all entries are as you want them.
- You may press 'Y' -or- <ENTER> for YES
- You may press 'N' upon which you will be allowed to re-enter values.
- You may press 'E' to EXIT the program.
-
- LOOK will then display your entries, and begin the search. When
- completed a tone will sound and LOOK will display Done!
- It will also tell you how many files it found and listed.
- Now you have a list that can be used for many purposes. See the section
- later on WHAT TO USE FOR!
-
- NEW ADDITION: As there is no visual sign that LOOK! is indeed working,
- it will now sound a short beep every time it writes a file to the "list"
- this lets you know that something really is happening!
-
-
- * LOOK - Command Line Mode:
-
- Basically the same as Interactive Mode, except that all parameters are
- entered on the command line.
- Also, we now have the optional /w switch, (upper or lower case), which
- tells LOOK to use a different method to search.
-
- EXAMPLE-1: LOOK C .BAT BATCH.LST will search drive C: for any
- occurrence of a filename with the extension of .BAT and write that list to
- the file BATCH.LST in the current directory.
-
- EXAMPLE-2: LOOK /w D TAX*.93? TAXLIST will search drive D: for any
- filename containing TAX in the filename and 93 in the file extension.
- this would find TAXPREP.93A - TAXPREP.93B - TAXSHEET.93 and so on.
- It works just the same as a DOS command would using a wildcard
- specification.
-
- The length of values are not checked on the Command Line, they are as
- follows: Drive = 3
- SearchText = 12
- ListFile = 30
- Values longer than this will be chopped off at the end, which may cause
- some unpredictable results, the least of which will be an error message
- and program Abort.
-
-
- Create Batch Files from LOOK! lists, with MAKEBAT!
-
-
- LOOK! 1.03 A FAST easy to use File Search Utility Page 5
-
- In the Interactive Mode, you cannot enter values longer than the limit.
-
- Should you only specify the drive and then hit ENTER, LOOK will
- beep at you and display an error message. You will be asked if you would
- like to view the Help Screen. Pressing your Y key will display the Help,
- pressing any other key, including ENTER will simply leave the program.
-
- You must enter all values: DRIVE SEARCHTEXT LISTFILE or you will get the
- error message as mentioned above.
-
- If you enter an invalid drive, LOOK will display as normal, and
- terminate as normal. But it will do it quickly, and tell you it found no
- files. = Found 0 Files.
-
- NOTE: In Command Line Mode, if you want the display written to the
- screen, you must use the word SCREEN for the ListFile. Leaving it blank,
- as you would in Interactive Mode, will NOT work. You WILL get the error
- message.
-
- I think that about sums it up.
- LOOK is an extremely POWERFUL tool, but it's also extremely EASY to use.
-
- ⁄ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒø
- ≥±±± What To Use For ±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±≥
- ¿ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒŸ
-
- Now you may ask, "What can I use LOOK for?"
-
- It can be used as a simple File Find utility, remember it searches ALL
- directories on the specified drive. If you know you have that important
- file on your great aunts cookie recipe on the drive, but you don't
- remember where, and you know it has the the name COOKIE, just run:
- LOOK C cookie screen - from the prompt, and if it exists, it WILL be
- found!
-
- You can use it with many Archiving programs to compress certain files into
- a backup file. Run LOOK with .DOC as the SearchText then run your
- archiver using the resulting list as the "feeder file" for the archive
- program. The following is an example for use with PKZIP.
-
- You want to place a copy of all .DOC files on your hard drive in a ZIP
- file called DOCFILES.
- A step by step example, assuming drive C:
-
- Step 1. Run LOOK C: .DOC DOCS.LST
- This will create a list of every file with the extension of .DOC that
- resides on drive C:
-
- Step 2. Run pkzip docfiles @docs.lst
- PKZIP will read the DOCS.LST and add each file listed to the Zipfile
- DOCFILES.
- As mentioned earlier, if the ListFile to create contains the SearchText
- in it, then it too will be listed in the ListFile. So our example here
- has created the zipfile DOCFILES that contains a copy of every file on
- your drive with the extension .DOC...and it also includes your DOCS.LST
-
- Create Batch Files from LOOK! lists, with MAKEBAT!
-
-

-
- that was created by LOOK.
-
- If you do NOT want the LOOK created list included in the search, just
- make sure that the filename given for ListFile does not contain the text
- specified for SearchText.
-
- I have covered just a couple of the more common ways you can use LOOK,
- but there is one more way, that may interest you!
-
- ***************************************************************************
- ⁄ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒø

-
- Using the companion program MAKEBAT you can use the list generated by
- LOOK to create a batch file that will run any DOS command you specify
- on each file in the ListFile. You could, for instance, copy each file to
- a floppy then delete it. Print each file, then copy to floppy.
-
- MAKEBAT will prompt you for information, you will enter the leading
- command, and the ending command, to be used on each line.
- EXAMPLE: Leading Command: COPY
- Ending Command : PRN
- Would be the same as typing COPY <filename> PRN at the prompt.
- This will be written for EACH file in the list.
-
- MAKEBAT will allow you to create up to FOUR command lines for each
- filename. So the above could become:
-
- LINE BEGINNING COMMAND FILENAME ENDING COMMAND
- 1 COPY ????????.??? PRN
- 2 COPY ????????.??? A:\
- 3 EDIT ????????.???
- 4 DEL ????????.???
-
- The above four lines would be written for each file in the list.
- Line 1 Prints the file,
- Line 2 Copies the file to a floppy in drive A:
- Line 3 Edits the file
- Line 4 erases the .BAK file after Edit
-
- In the above examples ????????.??? represents the path+filename as
- listed.
-
- MAKEBAT will ask you for the name of the Batchfile to create,
- ask you if you want to clear the screen, automatically add the
- @echo off to the beginning of the batchfile. It will also ask if you
- want display disabled, answering yes will cause MAKEBAT to append the
- text >NUL to every Ending Command, thus you will not see
- 1 file(s) copied for each command.
-
- MAKEBAT will also prompt you for a message to be displayed while
- the batchfile is running. It can be left blank.
- You will be prompted for confirmation before writing begins.
